Dr. Hisham Nashabeh visit to US universities:

Dr. Hisham Nashabeh, Chairman of the Board of Higher Education at Makassed Association was invited on an academic tour of USA universities during September and October of 2005. Dr Nashabeh gave forty six talks on Islam in the USA as a theme, to University students and professors.

The following letter was forwarded to us by Dr. Hallab, It is from Scranton University Provost as a small commendation of Dr. Nashabeh's visit.

Dear Mr. Hallab:

Dr. Hisham Nashabe's six week Fulbright Fellowship at Marywood University and the University of Scranton was a remarkable success for several reasons. Dr. Nashabe maintained an exhausting schedule of lectures and classroom visits. His efforts were characterized by punctuality, fine scholarly preparation, relentless good will, and gentlemanly charm that made friends of everyone, from fellow professors to the bus drivers and security personnel who escorted him between the two campuses.

Dr. Nashabe was provided rooms by the University of Scranton in a house on the edge of the campus. The house was fully furnished and had a full kitchen. He was given a University identification card with ensured admission to all the campus facilities, including the swimming pool, and provided with three full meals a day. The University transportation system was available to carry him from the University of Scranton 's campus to Marywood University when he needed to be there.

All faculties on both campuses were invited to host Dr. Nashabe for class lectures or other activities. During his stay, Dr. Nashabe gave approximately forty lectures to classes, several evening public lectures and several noon-hour presentations. His scholarly preparation for each speaking engagement was most impressive. Not only did he have extraordinary command of his subject material, but his pedagogy was always supple and focused on specific audience he addressed. Dr. Nashabe spoke to undergraduates of all levels, graduate students, the public and even high school sophomores and juniors. His natural abilities as a teacher shone as he perfectly matched his content and style to the capabilities of the students. Indeed, he was better able to appreciate the needs and abilities of the American students than are many of my American colleagues.

Dr. Nashabe also led Friday prayers at the University of Scranton mosque most of the weeks he was here. Dr. Riaz Hussein, an original signatory on the fellowship application, reported that Dr. Nashabe was an inspiring addition to the prayers, and his wisdom left a deep impression on the faithful.

Dr. Nashabe's visit to the University of Scranton and Marywood University was a great success. Our students and faculty had an excellent opportunity to learn more about Islam and to meet a gentlemen and a scholar as Islam's representative. As provost of the University of Scranton , I cannot be happier with Dr. Nashabe's visit, nor can I thank adequately the UCIP for the opportunity to host Dr. Nashabe. I know that Dr. Bernadette Russell of Marywood joins me in these sentiments.

Sincerely,

Harold W. Baillie, Ph.D.
Interim Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs
University of Scranton

We are grateful for the above letter of Dr. Baillie, and we feel very proud to have Dr. Nashabeh on our Adminstrative staff.

TEACHERS' DAY AT MAKASSED

On Teachers’ Day, Al Makassed celebrated the occasion by honoring three of its teachers who have retired after more than 30 years of service each.

Al Makassed also honored the US Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Vincent Battle, who on several occasions has voiced his support for Al Makassed and valued its work. Mr. Battle considers Al Makassed as the largest important moderate Islamic institution, who has been educating Lebanese generations for the past 126 years.

Mr Battle informed Al Makassed officials that he wishes to have continual association with Makassed, and follow on its activities and development. Mr Battle thanked Al Makassed whose friendship he holds valuably. Mr Battle had this to say on this occasion:

Quote:

“I am with you as a teacher not as Ambassador of the United States, but as a fellow teacher, I taught for many years and I honor the work that you do, you are indeed the flame for the future,

I talk to you also as a friend of Al-Makassed for many years in the past and many many years, (in shallah,) I hope, in the future.

Al Makassed is an example of a community based professional organization with a history, with a vision, with a passion for the work that all of you do.

No country, or government can provide to its citizens the services needed without the full cooperation, the full mobilization of resources of citizens organizing themselves and that is what Makassed has done for more than 100 years.
